Description
Rust fungus infection, light micrograph. Transverse section through a barberry (Berberis sp.) leaf infected by a parasitic rust (Puccinia sp.). There are two full cluster cups (aecidia, across upper centre) which have broken through the lower epidermis. The aecidium walls (peridium) have curled back and the rows of spore-forming cells produce aecidiospores, which are dispersed by wind or insects. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
