The first thing many people notice as you enter a home is the front door. A door is part of the face of a home. It's just a small part of the house but as an architectural element it says a lot about the times. This is especially true of historic homes. Many times doors were almost works of art in their day. Now they are works of art!
A classic example of New Orleans architectural elements is shuttered doors. Shuttered doors allow the homeowner to let a breeze in, keep the sun out, and combat storm winds. Shuttered doors are found on many of NOLA's historical homes and buildings peppered throughout the French Quarter. The architectural elements found throughout The Big Easy are reason enough for a visit.
Today many old doors are restored to give that feel "hey I did not forget that I am an old home". If N'awlins' doors, walls, courtyards and streets could talk I would love to hear their conversation.
